Joyce Sylvester
Joyce Juanita Sylvester (born on 19 September 1965) is a Dutch politician. She is the first female mayor and the first senator of Surinam origin. Since 2009 she has been the ''ad interim'' mayor of Naarden. As of 1 January 2016 Naarden will be merged with two other cities: Bussum and Muiden. Between 10 June 2003 and 9 June 2015 she was member of the Senate for the Labour Party (PvdA).
== Early life and education ==
Sylvester was born 19 September 1965 in Amsterdam.〔 Between 1977 and 1984 she followed VWO education in Amsterdam. She earned a propaedeutics in cultural anthropology at the University of Amsterdam in 1985.〔
Sylvester studied communications/information management, partly at Utrecht University, and political science/government finances at the University of Amsterdam. She completed both degrees between 1985 and 1991.〔 In 2000 she was awarded her promotion at the Faculty of Law at the VU University Amsterdam.〔 She worked as a journalist for the newspaper ''Het Parool'' between 1985 and 1992, as a financial policy officer at the Ministry of Transport from 1992 to 1994 and the public service of the municipality of Amsterdam between 1994 and 1998.〔
